About OLOA

Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Elementary School opened on December 2, 1962 in an 8-room facility directly behind Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Highway 20 at Highway 53 in Elfrida Township. In 1966, another four rooms were added to the school’s top level to accommodate the area’s growing population. In 2015, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School was awarded $11.9 million in capital funding for a new 599-capacity school in the Summit Park neighbourhood south of Rymal Road. Students and staff moved into the new 5,736 m² state-of-the-art school on Fletcher Road in Hannon on April 30, 2018. A blessing and dedication ceremony, officiated by Bishop Douglas Crosby, was held on June 12, 2018. On September 20, 2018, a statue of the Blessed Mother and Child, dedicated to the religious sisters, past and present, was installed on the school grounds to commemorate the integral role and selfless service of the teaching sisters in the founding of our present day school system.

Our School Logo

Our School Logo

Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Elementary School's NEW Official Logo was launched in March 2010.

The new official logo for Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Elementary School is rich in symbolism. The symbols used in the crest represent the Assumption of Mary, the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her life.

At the centre of the crest is a traditional symbol to represent Mary, the letter “M”. At the core is the Cross symbolizing the centrality of Jesus Christ in Catholic Education.

The halo of twelve stars above the “M” represents Mary, Queen of the Heavens, corporeally assumed into Heaven. In Revelations 12:1, Mary is described: ”And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.”

The three stars under the “M” serve to remind us of the importance of the partnership of home, parish and school; the communion of persons within the Blessed Trinity; and the three roles of Mary, the daughter of God, the mother of Jesus and the spiritual spouse of the Holy Spirit. The crescent of stars under the “M” also recalls the moon under Mary’s feet as depicted in Revelations 12:1.

Viewed together, the symbols hint to the face of Mary: the rounded “M” being like hair that frames the face, the three stars like a necklace and the halo of stars, a crown on her head.

Our School Song 2004 and 2017

Proud to Be a Child of God
Written by Deanne Smiley – January 2004

We come together every day
To learn and grow and laugh and play
A place where we feel safe and free
Our Lady of the Assumption
So proud are we

Proud to be a child of God
We try to do what Mary would
Like care for each other
Helping our brother
Our Lady of the Assumption be our guide

Wide open spaces farm and field
We sow the seeds of unity
The Falcon flies and then takes rest
Winners are we when we do our best

We believe that if we try
Together we can do our part
To make this world a better place
Where every child can have a voice

Together We Are Strong
Music and Lyrics: Olivia Maldonado
OLOA 2017

Verse 1:
We stand together to create one community
Our strengths lie in our differences & diversity
Created in God’s image we are disciples of Christ
We are stewards of the earth & are leaders in virtue, not vice
Together we are strong
Together we belong
Falcons are we
Our Lady of Assumption…we’re proud to be.
Verse 2:
Let’s join our voices to create one entity
Because we plant the seeds that shape our destiny
We come from near and far
So let’s help one another & realize the truth in who we are
Together we are strong
Together we belong
Falcons are we
Our Lady of Assumption…we’re proud to be.
Bridge (chanted)
O---L---O---A--- we’re the falcons we’re here to stay (4 times)
