Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Elementary School opened on December 2, 1962 in an 8-room facility directly behind Our Lady of the Assumption Church on Highway 20 at Highway 53 in Elfrida Township. In 1966, another four rooms were added to the school’s top level to accommodate the area’s growing population. In 2015, the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School was awarded $11.9 million in capital funding for a new 599-capacity school in the Summit Park neighbourhood south of Rymal Road. Students and staff moved into the new 5,736 m² state-of-the-art school on Fletcher Road in Hannon on April 30, 2018. A blessing and dedication ceremony, officiated by Bishop Douglas Crosby, was held on June 12, 2018. On September 20, 2018, a statue of the Blessed Mother and Child, dedicated to the religious sisters, past and present, was installed on the school grounds to commemorate the integral role and selfless service of the teaching sisters in the founding of our present day school system.

Our School Logo
logo1

Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Elementary School's NEW Official Logo was launched in March 2010.

Background:

The new official logo for Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Elementary School is rich in symbolism. The symbols used in the crest represent the Assumption of Mary, the bodily taking up of the Virgin Mary into Heaven at the end of her life.

At the centre of the crest is a traditional symbol to represent Mary, the letter “M”. At the core is the Cross symbolizing the centrality of Jesus Christ in Catholic Education.

The halo of twelve stars above the “M” represents Mary, Queen of the Heavens, corporeally assumed into Heaven. In Revelations 12:1, Mary is described: ”And there appeared a great wonder in heaven; a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars.”

The three stars under the “M” serve to remind us of the importance of the partnership of home, parish and school; the communion of persons within the Blessed Trinity; and the three roles of Mary, the daughter of God, the mother of Jesus and the spiritual spouse of the Holy Spirit. The crescent of stars under the “M” also recalls the moon under Mary’s feet as depicted in Revelations 12:1.

Viewed together, the symbols hint to the face of Mary: the rounded “M” being like hair that frames the face, the three stars like a necklace and the halo of stars, a crown on her head.

Our School Song 2004 and 2017

Proud to Be a Child of God
Written by Deanne Smiley – January 2004

We come together every day
To learn and grow and laugh and play
A place where we feel safe and free
Our Lady of the Assumption
So proud are we

Proud to be a child of God
We try to do what Mary would
Like care for each other
Helping our brother
Our Lady of the Assumption be our guide

Wide open spaces farm and field
We sow the seeds of unity
The Falcon flies and then takes rest
Winners are we when we do our best

We believe that if we try
Together we can do our part
To make this world a better place
Where every child can have a voice

The Assumption of Mary into Heaven

When Jesus died on the cross, he gave his mother to his apostle John. That means that he wanted Mary to treat John as her son, and John to treat Mary as his mother and take care of her. Mary moved into John's home, where he said Mass each day. So Mary was close to her Son in the Blessed Sacrament, even though He had ascended into Heaven.

Mary's love for God and Jesus grew even stronger than it had been when Jesus had been present on earth. She grew more holy every day. People came to visit her, she was kind and patient with everyone. Saint Luke (who wrote the Gospel of Saint Luke) painted a picture of her during this time. The portrait of 'Our Lady of Perpetual Help" which was painted centuries later, used Saint Luke's portrait as a model of what Mary looked like.

Finally when she was very old, it was time for Mary to die. She had enough time to say goodbye to all the apostles before she died. The grieving apostles took her body to a tomb near the one that Jesus was laid in. They covered her with a white shroud and laid her to rest in the tomb.

But Mary's body didn't stay there. Jesus came to her and took her body and soul into heaven to be with Him. Mary was the Immaculate Conception - the only person except Jesus who had been born without the stain of Original Sin,the disobedience of Adam and Eve. God and Jesus would not let the body of the Mother of God decay. This was her reward for her love of God and her years of faithful prayers and suffering.
