September is Smart Commute Month

Event Date: Sep 11, 2017

Starting September 11 until October 6, Smart Commute Hamilton, an association led by the City of Hamilton, will be hosting Smart Commute Month.

During this time, staff and students are encouraged to use active transportation, such as walking, cycling, public transit, or carpooling, to get to and from school or work. This initiative provides a fun and easy way for children to learn about the environment while increasing physical activity. It’s also a great way for children to learn and practice road safety skills. Walking to school has the added benefit of improving air quality through reduced car trips, and that in turn helps the environment.

Smart Commute Month also ties in with, and supports the city’s Active and Sustainable School Transportation (ASST) Charter, endorsed by the Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board in April 2015. The charter focuses on increasing physical activity, reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, enhancing neighbourhood safety, and instilling a greater sense of community, says Superintendent of Education Morris Hucal.

“The Hamilton-Wentworth Catholic District School Board is fully invested in creating a safe, healthy and sustainable community for future generations of students,” he adds. “Sustainable school transportation is a way of not only caring for our community and earth, but ensuring a healthy and active lifestyle for our students.”

Smart Commute's goal is to provide better, greener options to move travel around the city. In addition to participating in Smart Commute Month, Smart Commute has created an online survey to provide insight into how Metrolinx and Hamilton can provide more convenient, effective commute options. As an added bonus, all participants are entered into a prize draw to win one of two $300 VIA Rail vouchers.
